Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham apparently didn’t see much value in trying to recruit LeBron James during free agency.
Cunningham recently explained that he didn’t reach out to James because he didn’t believe his pitch would have changed the course of LeBron’s decision.
While recruiting superstar free agents has become a common part of NBA roster building, Cunningham seemingly understood that James’ decision would ultimately come down to what was best for LeBron and his career.
Rather than making a call just for the sake of making one, Cunningham opted to stay out of the process.
The decision is certainly interesting considering the impact James could have on any team he joins. A player with LeBron’s résumé, experience and championship pedigree would immediately change the expectations surrounding a franchise.
For Cunningham and the Pistons, however, the focus remains on continuing to build around their young core and establishing Detroit as a legitimate contender.
Cunningham’s comments also provide an interesting look at how NBA players view the recruiting process behind the scenes. Sometimes, even a pitch from another star may not be enough to change a superstar’s mind.
Would you have tried to recruit LeBron if you were Cade Cunningham?
